To the novice technician, the following observations may seem to indicate that the CPU pictured is Shot:
The CPU no longer functions, in spite of being tested in 2 known working mother boards, and is over three years old.
Believing this CPU to be shot is a common novice mistake. Although the CPU is no longer functional, it is not Shot.
The following picture documents a CPU which is definitely Shot:
A thorough examination reveals powder burns adjacent to a hole of approximately .22 caliber, as well as fragmentation that generally accompanies a Shot CPU.
